Jambo and welcome to Donge Spice Gardens in Zanzibar.

Our small, family-run gardens in the middle of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago, are passionately dedicated to cultivating and processing spices. Fragrant vanilla, warm cinnamon, spicy pepper, aromatic cloves, and many other natural treasures thrive here-sustainably and using traditional manual labor.

Visit us and we will take you on a journey through our plantations, showing you how our spices are grown, harvested, and processed. Immerse yourself in the flavors of Zanzibar with all your senses. Discover the secrets of spices, learn about their significance in local culture, and taste freshly harvested treasures right on site.

We look forward to welcoming you to our gardens and introducing you to the true essence of Zanzibar. And please keep in mind: our gardens are productive sites, not intended just for show, so we depend on seasons and weather and maybe some work has to be done when you are here.

Spices and team

At Donge Spice Gardens in Zanzibar, we grow a variety of exotic spices. For centuries our families grow pepper, cinnamon and cloves apart from many other herbs and spices - and all just for private use. The knowledge of how to do these things is deep in the roots of our families.

20 years ago we started a cooperative of some 25 families to grow vanilla, one of the most precious spices in the world - and one of the most labor-intensive ones as well. By now we count 15 experienced vanilla-growers and a lot of people that look after the plants the whole year. As the vanilla plant, which is a part of the orchids family, lacks a natural help like insects or birds for pollination, it must be made by humans. If the vanilla opens its flowers, you just got few hours to pollinate them.

Apart from vanilla we are growing pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, turmeric and ginger as well as some chilies in our gardens. These spices thrive in a natural, sustainable environment, grow together with fruits and herbs and are harvested with great care using traditional methods.

Our team consists of local families, whose main income derives from the agriculture and the spices. We work closely together with Blue Spices Zanzibar Ltd., a spice company dedicated to highest quality in spices and the way they are produced. And we cooperate with the Mamas of Zanzibar, a group of dedicated women passionate about sharing their knowledge of spices, plants, and Zanzibar’s rich culture. Together, we aim to bring you closer to the diversity of flavors while supporting the local community.

Visit us, book a spice tour which is different from all others, and experience the true essence of Zanzibar.

You can also book a spice tour at the Donge Spice Gardens with the Mamas of Zanzibar. This group of Zanzibari women is dedicated to introducing travelers to the island’s cultural and traditional heritage. A key part of this experience includes shopping together at local markets, preparing traditional dishes, and enjoying meals as a community. The spices used come from the Donge Spice Gardens.

Or, as the Mamas put it: “Our experiences are for those who want to taste the exotic flavors of Zanzibar — made together with the locals. They’re for anyone interested in living the real Zanzibar lifestyle, making a positive impact, and having a fun day with us.”

These local experiences are designed by Maskat, a Zanzibari single mother of three, to empower local Zanzibari women through opportunities in Zanzibar’s tourism and heritage sector.

Traditions in Zanzibar are most often passed to the next generations by women. A part of this culture is the colorful Khangas, thin cotton woven cloths, which are worn by Zanzibari women. Each design has a different meaning and is a form of communication. For the spices we used the most relevant ones.

Even if growing spices is part of our lives for a very long time, improvement is always necessary. Water supply is getting more and more a problem. And it is not enough to install solar-powered pumps. We also changed the way we use the water and the soil, arranging everything in a perfect way to keep the soil moist for a long time.
